Why we don't use "the" before "industry"?

When we're talking about the area in which one works, we don't use the article.

She works in media.
He works in retail.
They work in finance.

"Industry" in the sentence you quoted is the cover-all term for careers/jobs like those in construction.

"I work in the industry" isn't an incorrect sentence. It just requires a specific context.

Paul: Do you know anything about the media?
Helen: Everything! I work in the industry!
