Is my use of "in my hand luggage" and "that is" idiomatic?

When I travel I take things in my hand luggage. That is a backpack or a suitcase.

Context: I mean luggage you take by hand.

Your backpack or suitcase is your hand luggage. You don't say you carry the former in the latter.

It hadn't occurred to me before (in this thread), but it's not called "hand luggage" in AmE. If it was, you wouldn't have needed to look it up, since I'm pretty certain you've been on a plane.

Hand luggage (BrE) = carry-on (AmE)
