[Essay] Is there a role for libraries in our age of electonic books and digital information?

Hello, everyone! I haven't posted anything for a while, but I will be really happy if I receive feedback about this essay:


There is no doubt that digital sources of information and programs for reading electronic books have become increasingly popular recently. However, libraries are still quite popular among people and are preferred for visiting. What is more, libraries still have something more to offer to modern people and that is why I strongly believe that there is a place for them in contemporary society.

To begin with, libraries have always been the keepers of human culture, traditions and history. Throughout the centuries these places have been homes of human knowledge. They are of a great importance of historical, spiritual and even architectural aspect. Libraries have succeeded in keeping safe the very first works of great writers, scientists, political and religious leaders. For example, the Vatican archives and the Vatican library have vital role in the Christian world. Another example comes from the famous library of Alexandria where one of the most ancient and priceless manuscripts are kept. For these reasons the role of libraries as ‘guards’ of the human wisdom, culture and history cannot be underestimated or neglected due to the development of new technologies such as modern digital devices for reading.

Another point to consider is that libraries can offer to people something which any digital book cannot – a peace of mind. Usually, libraries are quiet places, isolated from the outside world. That is why they are ideal for humans who pine solitude, relax and harmony, for intstance. In a library people are able to hear their own thoughts without being interrupted or disturbed by other human beings. In other words, the unique atmosphere of the libraries and their ability to free humans ‘minds is what they can offer more to people compared to the electronic books.

After all things considered it seems reasonable to conclude that libraries still have a vital function in the 21[SUP]st[/SUP] century. The historical, cultural and architectural meaning of these places and the unique atmosphere which they offer prove that they still have a place in our high technology world.
