Lisa turned John against his best friend Toby by telling lies about him.

Please check my sentence.

Lisa turned John against his best friend Toby by telling John lies about Toby.

At least two kinds of lies are possible.

Tarheel, are you sure you mean "her"?

Tufguy, I think Tarheel meant "him", not "her".

Sorry, I don't understand. Where did he write "Her"? How about my sentence?

Tarheel wrote "her" and revised his suggestion when I pointed out his error.

I added "him" to your sentence to clarify who told lies to whom. Tarheel's version makes it explicit.

Tufguy, do you know what I mean by two kinds of lies?

How about Lisa lied to turn John against his best friend Toby?

You can lie about somebody in a positive way in the sense that you are making that person appear to be better than he or she really is. Or you can lie about somebody in a negative way in the sense of making that person appear worse than he or she really is. That's two kinds of lies.

Do you understand now that there are two ways you can lie about somebody (or something)?

White lies are a different category. I'm talking about the kind of lies you might put on your resume (to make yourself look good) vs. the kind of lies your enemies might tell about you (to make you look bad).
