I'm writing a middle grade novel that takes place late in the 19th century. The students take the Eighth Grade Examination. One of the questions is: Name the parts of speech and define those that have no modifications.

Back then the Determiner was one of the parts of speech. It was the articles a, an, the, et al. that are now included with adjectives. So I propose that the determiner cannot be modified.

I read in another thread on this site that prepositions cannot be modified, because any modifiers actually modify the prepositional phrase, not just the preposition.

The other part of speech that I guess is not modifiable is the conjunction.

I believe all other parts of speech: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, and interjection can be modified.

I'm hoping I can get either yea or nay on what I assumed are the parts of speech that cannot be modified.

How might you modify an interjection?
