Dear all:
What does "terms" mean in the following passage? Does it refer to "terminology" or "condition"? It is from the book The Parsi Community of India and the Making of Modern Iran, p. 13, by Afshin Marashi. I think "straddle" means "condition" but I am not sure.

While the ideas of European positivism writ large, and the allied field of orientalist science, played a central role in shaping modern Iranian intellectual history—often in terms that were refracted indirectly through Parsi sources in what Talinn Grigor has called “reviving the invented”—the local cultural and political landscape that defined the Indo-Iranian world, and out of which novel forms of thought invariably emerged during the modern period, was equally consequential.
