1) We travelled a mile over the river.

Does that mean:

a) We went one mile beyond the river.
or
b) At a place where the river was a mile wide we crossed it
or
c) We travelled a mile along the river

Gratefully,
Navi

It doesn't make much sense at all. The meaning would come from an interpretation of what the speaker most likely has in mind. That would probably be a). It might also be that you went a mile in total including a traversal of the river at some intervening point.

It really sounds as though you made this sentence up. It doesn't make much sense to make up sentences that you don't know the meaning of, does it? Why would you do that? Please explain where this question came from.
