Good morning, everyone.

An example sentence of "foil" in Longman Contemporary: The escape attempt was foiled by police guards.

What does "police guards" mean?

Thank you so much in advance.

Welcome to the forum, WilliamTaft! (By chance, is your middle name Howard?) ;)

A guard is someone whose job is to prevent prisoners from escaping. "Police guards" are employees of a police department whose job is to prevent prisoners from escaping.

Thank you so much for your quick reply and greeting. I'm learning the article "William Taft: Heavy" on VOA Learning English. :D

I don't think "learning the article" is correct. I'd say "studying/reading".

@WilliamTaft I would say that the story goes that he was so big that he got stuck in the White House bathtub, but it is not true.

Also, I wouldn't say he didn't have a problem with his appearance. I might say he wasn't bothered by it.

Yes, he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by some nameless President and served in that office until the day he died. (There are certain offices that require Senate confirmation, and that is one of them.)

(Taft weighed about 300 ibs.)

Rather than say he was appointed to that office by "a later president" I would state the name of that person. (That's the way it's normally done ) It wouldn't have been hard to do that. I suppose you're supposed to look it up.
