[Grammar] Preposition ‘towards’ question

Is the preposition towards really used in everyday talk or I can substitute it for the preposition to?
I saw Joanna hurrying towards me along the drive.
Victor was standing with his back towards me.
She directed a brief glance towards Peter.
a path leading towards the river

Yes, 'towards' is really used, and no, you can't always replace it with 'to'.
"I walked towards the river" does not mean that you walked to the river.
