The sun rises, but we raise the flag. I rise up from my chair, but they raise a sunken ship from the ocean floor. (Let us not talk about the physics of whether the sun rises or only appear to rise due to the rotation of the Earth, though, okay?) Last edited: Oct 18, 2010

Eg "Raise your hand!". It's like you asked yourself "raise what?". "Rise" is an intransitive verb, hence it doesn't require an object. Eg "The temperature is rising." Last edited: Oct 18, 2010
