What's the difference between the verbs Raise & Rise?

Something can rise on its own, but raise is transitive -- someone does something to something else to make it rise.

The sun rises, but we raise the flag.
I rise up from my chair, but they raise a sunken ship from the ocean floor.

(Let us not talk about the physics of whether the sun rises or only appear to rise due to the rotation of the Earth, though, okay?)

The main difference is as follows:

"Raise" is a transitive verb so an object is required. Eg "Raise your hand!". It's like you asked yourself "raise what?".

"Rise" is an intransitive verb, hence it doesn't require an object. Eg "The temperature is rising."
