Hi.

Are my sentences good with "self-evident"?

I think this word is difficult to use.

1) These truths were by no means self-evident when Galileo first suggested them. (Not sure.)
2) It was self-evident to her that anything so wonderful could not have evolved accidentally. (weird)

Yes, they're good.

Yes, they're good.

It was self-evident to her that anything so wonderful could not have evolved accidentally.

I wonder if it should be ".....could not had evolved accidentally" because the sentence is past tense. Also, jutfrank, I wonder if "self-evident" here means "clear"?

The term is famous in American history as the seventh word of the best-known line of our Declaration of Independence: We hold these truths to be self-evident …. It means "obvious; not needing explanation".

And, of course, there was nothing self-evident about them. I read this book a while back: These Truths.
