Hi there! I'm a university student and I've taken a translation course this semester.
We have a mistranslation project for our finals.
I've encountered a problem during my research, and I could really need some help.

When it comes to student organizations, like the choir, or a film club, or sports team, do we use the word "society?"

I usually use the word "club" or "association" when I write. Therefore, I find the word "society" a bit too "broad."
However, after checking the dictionary, I learned these words have similar meaning. Yet, my question is, do people use them in the same way? Or is there specific difference between them? For example, universities call them societies, but in middle school or high school, they call them clubs? Something like that?

Most sincere thanks for the help!

I don't think there's anything fixed, and there's nothing to stop you using film club/society in either context, but I think club is more likely for younger people and society sounds more 'grown-up'.

"Society" sounds like you are putting on airs. Stick with "club."
