"These batteries are meant to last for a year."
(No context. Just an example sentence in a dictionary.)

Does it mean that those batteries are made/designed so that they have the ability to last for a year?

Or, it just means that they are expected to last for a year?

Thank you.

(There is no context. It's just an example sentence in a dictionary.)

Does it mean that those batteries are made/designed so that they have the ability to last for a year no question mark here or no comma here does it just [STRIKE]means[/STRIKE] mean that they are expected to last for a year?

[STRIKE]Thank you.[/STRIKE] Unnecessary. Thank us after we help you, by clicking on the "Thank" button.

What was the sentence supposed to be exemplifying? (What word did you look up in the first place?)

Without further context, it could be taken to mean either "It's generally expected that those batteries will last a year" or "The manufacturers make them with the intention of them lasting a year".

Please note my corrections above, and note that I have changed your thread title. Titles should be relevant to the post and unique, and should include some/all of the words/sentences you are asking us about.

I was looking up "to be meant to do something", and the dictionary's explanation is "to be intended to do something".

Can that sentence be taken to mean "these batteries are supposed to last a year"?

Can that sentence be taken to mean "these batteries are supposed to last a year"?

Yes. However, it depends on on usage. When they say the batteries are meant to last a year it's an estimate based on expected usage.

Yes, and it could mean that they have failed to last that long
