[Grammar] Two past perfect verbs in the same sentence.

This sentence is from Arthur Conan Doyle's story. Why there are two past perfect verbs? Is it the same to say:

I had come to these conclusions before ever I entered his room.

or

I came to these conclusions before ever I entered his room.

You would then give the full sentences and your actual question within the body of the post. As Tarheel pointed out, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote more than one story so saying "This sentence is from Arthur Conan Doyle's story" is incorrect. It suggests he wrote only one. Please give us the name of the book the quote comes from.

It is OK to use two past perfect verbs in the same sentence- Conan Doyle's sentence is fine.
