1. Is there an update with the project?

Is this correct?

What do you want to say? If you're asking if an update has been received along with the project, use "with".

But if, as I think you do, you mean an update regarding the project, use "on".

Or Is there a project update?

I might be wrong, but I would put it as 'Are there any updates on the project?'

That'd depend on whether you were expecting a single update or multiple ones.

By the way, I understood "update" as meaning "latest news", and not, as used in IT, an improvement or new feature or new version.

I'd probably say "Can you update me on the project?" or "Can you give me an update on the project?" Those give the responder the option of updating you or telling you there's no news.
