well-off or better off?

Do you use well-off more or better-off more for being rich? I feel I've heard better-off so much more than well-off, but in some readings well-off can be found.

ex)After entering Toyota, he got well-off(better-off).

Better off is used to compare two things, not as an expression that someone is comfortably wealthy. Like "You're better off telling the boss about the mistake than waiting for him to find out about it later."
