what is the meaning of "until we have some distance from both"?

I am reading some writing prompts but I don't understand the one below.

"Claim: Knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today. Reason: We are not able to make connections between current events and past events until we have some distance from both."

I don't understand the part I have underlined, especially the words "have some distance"

please explain it in a simple way.

What do you not understand about the couple of good responses you have received on Word Reference?

We cannot connect present events with past events. Only later can we connect events, when both are in the past.
