Dear all,

Is " in contrast/ in the other hand" really essential after "whereas" in this sentence ?

Doctors’ salaries have risen substantially, whereas in contrast/ in the other hand nurses’ pay has actually fallen.

Is there any meaning difference if the " in contrast/ in the other hand" is deleted ?
Is extra " in contrast/ in the other hand" making the sentence wordy ?

Many thanks

'in contrast/on the other hand' are always redundant after 'whereas'.

Thanks for your answer.

Is this kind of redundancy is common in spoken English ?

Written academic English ?

Many thanks

It's unlikely to be common in written academic English.

In my opinion, I'd say, personally, I think, generally speaking, it's usually quite common, at least, normally. ;-)

Doctors’ salaries have risen substantially, while nurses’ pay has actually fallen.

How about a simple "while."

Thanks a lot for your answer.

Why do native speakers use a lot of redundancy ?
What is the function of redundancy ?

To all teachers,

Should English learning student speak with redundancy too ?

Many thanks

Merry Christmas and happy New Year !

Thanks a lot for your answer.

Why do native speakers use a lot of redundancy ? Because when we talk, we don't plan what we are going to say, so we often end up with redundancy.

What is the function of redundancy ? When it's intential, it's to add emphasis. "Well, personally, I think..." it to emphasize that it's your own opinion and not necessarily shared by many, or even anyone else.

To all teachers,

Should English learning student speak with redundancy too ? No, not unless it's to add emphasis. Examles like "whereas on the other hand" are NOT good style.

Many thanks

Merry Christmas and happy New Year !

Happy holidays to you, too.

Note that punctuation marks come immediately after the last letter. You've been leaving a space.
