Which one of the following sentences sounds better?

Participants’ constructive exchanges of views made the Conference a place of fruitful discussions.

Participants’ constructive discussion made the Conference very fruitful.

Though I am not a teacher, I feel the second one sounds better.

It is very simple and conveys the same meaning.

The second is better but use plural form of 'discussion'.
