I would still have the ''pulling it..." phrase modifying the subject "I".
There are other interpretations. I tend to like interpretations that require few or no understood words. If you chose to say that "while I was" are understood, you could diagram it as a subordinate clause.

This is getting very close to parenthetical, which, as I think I said, I want to check out in House and Harman.
