Now I think "false" is a predicate adjective and "me" is the object of the understood preposition "to" (sort of like an indirect object).
What I am sticking with is the idea that "played" works as a copulative verb.

IMO, 'played' is a [T]; me = Od; 'false' completes the meaning of the direct object by specifying one of its attributes (that the speaker finds important) --> objective complement

Yes, Frank, that is correct. I discard my idea and adopt yours. This thread reinforced in me the idea that analyzing sentences starts with understanding them.
