    The early railroads received huge land grants, not to mention

    I won't R-K it at the moment, but I think it is a way of euphemistically saying "and". "Not to mention" in fact means "to mention as well" i.e. "and".

    Like other recent posts, I think THAT is a good one. It could generate considerable debate.

    Why not put "not to mention" on the dashed line that usually joins compound direct objects? The diagram would be simpler.
