ranging
"More than two dozen companies sell DNA tests direcrly to the public, ranging in price from a few hundred dollars to more than $2.500."
1.What part of speech is "ranging"?
2.What 's its function?
Thanks!

I would say that "ranging" is a participle, with its own participial phrase, and it is acting as a modifier, modifying "tests" (acting like an adjective, if you prefer to think of it that way)
