Information on modals

I have an assignment on modals and I couldn't find a book which deals with extrinsic/intrinsic modality in depth. Can you suggest one? I have to do a thorough research on this topic, and I've only found books for practice.

1. The epistemic level of modality is also called “extrinsic modality” It is concerned with matters of knowledge
2. Intrinsic modality (also called “root” or “deontic modality”) refers to issues of the non-epistemic level. The contrast between the two major categories is seen in the different interpretations of must and may:
He may have been delayed (epistemic)
You may stay if you wish (deontic)

Epistemic is derived from Greek for knowledge speaker’s knowledge
Deontic is Greek for binding (imposing an obligation, granting permission)

Yes, it's a Private Message. Click on the Members' Area tab, and then Manage Account Information. Scroll down, and down the middle of the screen you will see the Control Panel; click on Send New Message. Alain's username is "Chomat".
