2. Intrinsic modality (also called “root” or “deontic modality”) refers to issues of the non-epistemic level. The contrast between the two major categories is seen in the different interpretations of must and may: He may have been delayed (epistemic) You may stay if you wish (deontic) Epistemic is derived from Greek for knowledge speaker’s knowledge Deontic is Greek for binding (imposing an obligation, granting permission) Last edited by Dr. Jamshid Ibrahim; 14-Aug-2007 at 18:36. |

| Thanks a lot! That's really helpful. I'll include it in my assignment, if you don't mind... |

| Sorry, I'm new in the forum. What's a PM? I suppose it's a private message. If so, how can I send it? |

| Yes, it's a Private Message. Click on the Members' Area tab, and then Manage Account Information. Scroll down, and down the middle of the screen you will see the Control Panel; click on Send New Message. Alain's username is "Chomat". b PS It's simpler if you can find a post of his. Then, just click on "Chomat" and you'll get a menu that lets you send a PM. Last edited by BobK; 16-Aug-2007 at 21:53. Reason: Added PS |
