Default How to analysis the structure of this sentence?

• Drop plans for an EU president, since a strong personality (like Tony Blair) is unlikely to get the post and a weak individual in the job could hurt Europe more than helping it.

I don't understand the "could hurt Europe more than helping it".I'm confused with the word "helping".Can someone help analysing the structure of this sentence?

Thank you.

More than takes a nominal (e.g., a pronoun, a noun, gerund, a clause).

Below, in [1], the underlined clause functions as a nominal:
[1] A weak individual could hurt Europe more than s/he could help Europe.
Note that, the pronoun s/he is cumbersome, and the reason the writer opted for a reduced clause:
[2] A weak individual could hurt Europe more than helping Europe.
Does that help?
