capitalization

Microsoft Word tells me that the word "professor" should be capitalized in the following sentence:

My thesis, which was supervised by professor John Doe, covered the subject of...

Why?

Professor is a title, often written as 'Prof.', similar to Mr., Fr., Dr., Mrs., Sir, Capt. etc.

It is his professional title so requires the capital letter to indicate that he is not just any professor.
