Default Reduction of / in population

Reduction of/ in population of mice can lead to the death of wovles, since there is not enough food to feed on.

Thank you so much for your response.

A reduction in the population of mice can lead to the death of wolves since there will not be enough food for the wolves.

"Of" or "in" could be used in this sentence.

I have a feeling that "reduction of" is more pro-active (it was done by an external force) and "reduction in" is more passive (it happened naturally on its own).

NOT A TEACHER, PROBABLY NEVER WILL BE.
