    Default being not able to

Identify the one underlined word or phrases that must be changed in order for the sentence to be grammatically correct.

    1. Film directors can take far great liberties in dealing with concepts of time and space than stage directors can.
    2. Not able to type accurately would hurt a graduate’s chance of finding a suitable job as a secretary.
    3. No other beverage comes even close to rivaling coffee as the most widely drinking refreshment in the world.
    4. Restaurant patrons who stay after 11 o’clock will have to drive, walk, or take a taxi home unless the subway stops operating then.

Is "Not being able to" also acceptable?

'Before' does not work in #4. If the patrons stay after 11, they cannot take a taxi before the subway stops operating at 11. Ask yourself why the patrons will have to drive, etc.

I'd have used 'because'; we often introduce new information with this conjunction. 'Since' is possible, though 'since' usually suggests that the reason given is known to the reader. With 'for' the new information is often given almost as afterthought; it is not very natural here, in my opinion.
