Do you have any unusual words that you just love and try to somehow use in conversations, which usually makes your interlocutor do a double take? Anyway, that's one of my "hobbies".

I've recently fallen in love with befezzed.

Any other suggestions of words that make you go "there's a word for that?!"?

EDIT: This is now the official fez thread of usingenglish forums.

not a teacher

I don't think deliberately using words that the person you are talking to isn't going to understand is a very constructive habit. It will make them think you are trying to make them feel stupid.

Thank you for your comment.

I should try this! But where would I find a saguaro cactus in the middle of Toronto?

Hi freezeframe

As a development of the term NES, should Native (UKE) Speakers be called "Nukes"?
In context, an AME speaker may, on being challenged, say: "Oh dear! I've just been nuked!"

Best regards
R21 (UKE)

Somehow I have managed to go through life without realising the need for this word, though now I am hoping they're rerunning Tommy Cooper when I next go back to the UK. ;-)

You haven't lived life to the fullest until you realise your need for this word. Honest truth. In the words of Lenny Briscoe, "If I was kidding you I'd be wearing a fez and no pants."

Language aims at understanding, not misunderstanding each other.

This reminds me of Dave Barry´s Questions for Mister Language Person.

"Dear Mister Language Person, I would like to use the word ''befezzed'' more often. What does it mean?"

(Only difference: The latter is meant to be a joke.)

Well, I guess this thread is now over.

It was good while it lasted.

I think you might like this. :)

Excellent! I knew some of these before from playing too much trivia... but ferrule sounds like such a great word. :-D

And this sounds positively obscene:

If you don't wish to look people in the eyes, you can make a similar impression by focusing on their glabellae.

A few ferrules "up your sleeve" would be handy, but I wouldn't recommend a few "ferals" up your ferrule/sleeve!:lol:
