Is this correct and natural?

An asphalt road snaked around the mountain. After hiking for around 30 minutes, we arrived at a vast flat area overlooking the city. There were benches there and other hikers were resting on them. We turned left and found refuge behind a massive boulder on the slope which was scattered with trees. The drone of the city disappeared. We could only hear the wind rustling down the mountain.

That's fine, but what does it have to do with the rest of it?

After hiking for around 30 minutes, we arrived at a [STRIKE]vast[/STRIKE] flat area overlooking the city. There were benches there, and other hikers were resting on them. We turned left and found refuge behind a massive boulder on the slope, where many trees were growing. The drone of the city disappeared. We could only hear the wind rustling down the mountain.

I don't understand your use of the word refuse. Refuse from what?

I meant to say refuge from all the people in the flat area. They were looking for a secluded place.

I would use use that phrase. Perhaps:

They found the more secluded place they had been looking for.
