Is there a difference in the meanings of the following sentences?

1) It is important that your brother respects me.
2) It is important that your brother should respect me.

I think in '1' he already does respect me, and that is important.
In '2' we are talking about the future. Whether he respects me now or not an issue. He might respect me now or not. Most likely not.

I think people might use '1' instead of '2'. Is that correct?

Sentence 2 isn't grammatical. We wouldn't use "should" there. You'll hear either sentence 1 or "It's important that your brother respect me" (subjunctive).

Sentence 2 is about the present, not the future.

To old-fashioned speakers like me,

(1) means that your brother respects me, and I think this is important.
(1a - It is important that your brother respect me) suggest that your brother does not (yet) respect me. I thing such respect would be important.
(3) means that same as (1a). Unlike emsr2d2, I think it's grammatical - and common.
