1 - I've searched the internet for more information.
2 - I've searched for more information on the internet.

Are both sentences right, (equally) commonly used in everyday English, and do they have the same meaning?

Yes, they're both natural and mean the same thing.

Editors sometimes suggest that the last word of a sentence is often what you're emphasizing. So if you're discussing getting information, the first might be a little better, but if you're discussing uses of the internet, the second might be a little better.

But for most purposes, it doesn't matter which way you say it.

Is there a reason for not using the preposition "on" in the first sentence?

It's not necessary.

Think that search is a transitive verb with the internet as its object.

Ah, OK. So it's possible too...

Search the internet sounds like more detailed research than on the internet to me.
