Mine are or is?

Mine is red and blue

or

Mine are red and blue

yours are or is?

Yours is red

or

Yours are blue

Does it depend on thing that we mean? If the things are plural so the 'to be' must be plural ? and if the thing is singular so the 'to be' must be singular? even though the subject is plural?

please give me an explanation. thanks

Welcome to the forum, sxldv.

It depends on whether what is possessed is singular or plural.

'My sister and I have bikes. Mine is red and blue.'

'My brother and I have lots of marbles. Mine are red and blue.'

Why for the first one you use "is" and the second one you use "are" ?

Why for the first one did you use "is" and for the second one [STRIKE]you use[/STRIKE] "are"?

I have only one bike; it is red and blue.

I have lots of marbles; they are red and blue.

even though the subject is plural?

Yours is not necessarily plural- if it refers to one person, it is singular, and if it refers to two people, it is plural. However, this does not matter with the choice of the verb form, which agrees with the number of things we are talking about.

Yours is blue. (One person, one car)
Yours is blue. (Two people, one car)

Yours are blue. (One person, two cars)
Yours are blue. (Two people, two cars)
