Hello everybody!
My great grandfather made it a family taboo for anyone in our family to have a dog. I later found out that it was because he had been bitten by a dog at some time in his life — yet the whole family was bound by and subscribed to this.
I know what a taboo is, namely, it is something forbidden or something you avoid.
The way I understand the 1-st sentence is: My great grandfather forbade anyone in our family to have a dog.
or My great grandfather prohibited anyone in our family from having a dog.
Do you agree?
