Suppose a father has three sons. All of them applied for some position in government service, but unfortunately, each one of them failed to get such a position. Since then, they've been trying and trying, but without success. One day, while talking about this, one of their relatives says:

1) None of his sons could land a job in government service.

2) None of his sons has been able to land a job in government service.

3) None of his sons has managed to land a job in government service.

Could any one of them be used in the above situation?

Try:

A man has three sons. All of them applied for a job in government service. None of them succeeded in getting hired.

The first might imply that they have given up on trying, while the others could mean that they will try again.

Rewrite.

A man has three sons. All of them applied for jobs in government service, but none of them got hired. However, they have kept trying--so far without success.

If the man works for the government, he's not much use.

He's not much use to his sons as far as getting them hired.
