across the board

US
(in horse racing) denoting a bet in which equal amounts are staked on the same horse to win, place, or show in a race.
Source: Bing Dictionary

Does staked on the same horse to win, place, or show in a race mean staked on the same horse to win, to place, or to show in a race?

But what does staked on the same horse to place/show mean?

Betting "across the board" allows you to select a horse and you will win some money if he/she finishes 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. If you only bet on the horse to win, and he comes in second, then you win nothing.

If you bet "win, place, show" you will win some money if the horse finishes in any of the top three positions. But, obviously, more money for 1st than for 2nd or 3rd; and more money for 2nd than for 3rd.

Depending on the odds, you could lose money that way even if your horse comes in first.

I meant "win" in the above as "receive some winnings." Depending on the odds, and the finish of the horse, you may not actually come out ahead financially. If you bet $6 (2/2/2) and collect $4, you have "won" something, but you did not profit.
