The purpose of much writing about rock music seems to me to be to impress the reader with the floridness and cleverness of the writer rather than to convey any useful information.. "The Purples' is an informal way of referring to the band Deep Purple. As for the rest, your guess is as good as mine. As my profession before teaching was technical writing, I am particularly unimpressed by the sort of writer who has an idea, splurges out a bunch of words that they feel have some relevance to it, and then challenge the reader to work out the meaning.
