What's the difference between "to lie in" and "to sleep in"?

What's the difference between "to lie in" and "to sleep in"?

And could you correct the following sentence please:

"I wanted to turn off my mobile telefone not to be called next morning, but I forgot to do that and my friend called me so early, that my plan to sleep/lie in failed"

I partially agree. Sometimes, when I have a lie-in, I sleep really late and then get up. Sometimes, when I sleep in, I wake up at the normal time, then go back to sleep, then wake up again, read for a while, muck around on my phone for a bit, drop back to sleep for a while and then eventually drag myself out of bed

But I agree that "to sleep in" suggests sleeping late but with "to lie in" or "to have a lie-in", I might be awake or I might be asleep.
