[Grammar] using past tense after rather than

Hello,

Would it be correct to use past tense after "rather than" as in the following sentence?

I stayed home last night rather than went to cinema.


According to my knowledge we can only use simple present tense or present participle after " rather than". Please correct me if I am wrong.
