Have you tried OneLook Dictionary Search? You will find there more than thirty dictionaries with definitions and examples of metaphor.

Recently I've been studying similes and metaphors but don't know correctly what they're used for.

Can someone explain 'metaphors' to me?

Thankyou.

You tell your partner, "You are my sunshine." Not because you are confused about the source of light and heat on earth, but because your partner is more important to you than anything. It's a way of being dramatic.

In simple terms, similies and metaphors are used to indirectly describe something with the intention of giving the description a more profound meaning than if you were to use standard plain English.

For example:

Camels are ships of the desert.

This describes the usefulness (or functions) of camels. If you imagine the desert to be an ocean, then camels would serve as vessels (ships) that transport people and goods accross it.

This metaphor uses the idea of ships and the sea to describe camels and the desert.
