Which of the two is more appropriate, and why?

But in what cases and how?

Well I watched a show where a FBI agent meets with a disgruntled agent, the said agent says to him: "I gave you everything I had and you people betrayed me."

I was wondering why it wasn`t ÿou people have betrayed me"

It wasn't necessary to use the present perfect.

But is it wrong if it was used?
That answer wasn`t satisfying.

I need more explanations on why that is the case.

Thank you very much!!!! :)))

In this case, it's probably simple parallelism. "I did this, and [in return] you did that." Not, "I did this, and you have done that."
Put it down to style in this case.
