Big vs great

Can anybody tell which one is correct? A big competition, or a great competition?


Premier League is not a patch on Champions League because the competition in Champions League is bigger/greater due to the teams that play it.

I would say that the Champions League is greater (more magnificent and important) than any single nation's top league. (Not a football fan)

Apparently, neither teechar nor Tdol are sports fans. You could say:

XYZ league is a better league because competition there is tougher there than it is in other leagues.
