Which sentence would you prefere?

"We've been exposed to a lot of difficulties."

OR

"Many difficulties have confronted us"

There is a difference between the two. I may be exposed to an illness and never get sick. Many difficulities confronted us means that we actually had problems.

Does the second sentence sound natural to a native speaker?
