1) I ran across this expression when I was reading a novel last night.
2) I ran into this expression when I was reading a novel last night.

Can someone please tell me which of the above sentences sounds natural?

 'Run across', like 'bump into' (when it's used metaphorically, and doesn't involve a low-speed crash ;-)), is used of people: 'I ran across an old friend at the conference'.
