Dear teachers,

Would you tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

“Dick” said the dwarf, trusting his head in at the door, “my pet, my pupil, the apple of my eye, hey, hey.” (Ch. Dickens, “The Old Curiosity Shop”)

George was the apple of his father's eye. (W. S. Maugham, "Six Stories Written in the First Person Singular")

the apple of the eye = something, but usually someone, that you cherish above all others
cherish = be fond of; be attached to

Thanks for your efforts.

Regards,

V.
