[Grammar] be familiarized or be familiarize?

Hello! I would like to ask a question.

"He needs to be familiarized with the new system."
"Their salary will be delayed."

I have been using the same format (be + the past tense of the verb) but I don't know the correct explanation for this. Why does the verb have to be in its past form if there is "be"?

It is not the past tense, but the past participle. In regular verbs, these two have the same form, but many irregular verbs have different forms.

familiarize (infinitive/present), familiarized (past simple), familiarized (past participle)
defeat (infinitive/present), defeated (past simple), defeated (past participle)
see (infinitive/present), saw (past simple), seen (past participle)
ride (infinitive/present), rode (past simple), ridden (past participle)

The past participle is used:
in perfect tense constructions (active): We have defeated the opposition.
in Passive voice constructions: the opposition has been defeated.
(with some verbs) as an adjective:the defeated army slowly found its way home.
