My phone is in/on silent mode.

Thanks.

You put your mobile on silent mode.
Or,
You set it to silent/vibrate.

You can use both I think.
I think that "You put your phone in silent mode" is also correct.

Good question. The usage is in flux because it is so new. We normally have things in one mode or another. But if we leave off "mode", we tend to say they're on it. My phone is in silent mode, because I put my phone on silent. That "on" is trying to take over, I'd say, because we so rarely add the word "mode", and we can now say that our phone is on silent mode without sounding too weird.

Interesting!
What you guys think about the effect of "mode" there? Do you agree with coolfootluke?

I certainly agree that the usage is in flux because it is so new. cfl is quite possibly right; after reading all the posts, I am honestly not sure what I say when my phone is in/on silent (mode). I am fairly sure that I don't say that it is in silent, but that's all I can say with any degree of confidence..
