What is the correct way to write this sentence?

A good chunk of society is/are unaware of the realities of Domestic Violence.

Thanks in advance.

Many people are unaware of the realities of domestic violence.

If I were concerned about 'correctness', I would not use 'a good chunk of society'.

A good chunk of society is/are unaware of the realities of Domestic Violence.

NOT A TEACHER

(1) May I add a few words to the moderator's excellent answer.

(2) I did some googling. If you insist on using "chunk," then the

"winner" seems to be is when paired with the word society:

"A good chunk of society is mentally ill."

"A good chunk of society actually believes ...."

"A good chunk of society is brainwashed ...."
